Hotel "Russia"
Hotel "Russia"

Hotel "Russia" Built in 1965. Architect — V. Muratov; engineers — V. Parshin and A. Ivanova; artist — A. Gan.

There were no special sun-protection elements — their role was played by deep loggias of varying widths, which relieved the facade of monotony. The porch and vestibule wall were decorated with reliefs by Arnold Gan.

The hotel was and remains one of the city’s main landmarks. Notably, locals continue to call it by its old name, even though after the 2005 reconstruction it is named Grand Mir Hotel.

The building forms the ensemble of the former Sapper Square together with the first nine-story building (with airline ticket offices on the ground floor) and the House of Fashion.

After reconstruction, the original brutalist decoration was lost, so the building lost its status as a vivid example of Soviet modernism and now belongs more to the category of its “former representatives.”
